How do I install Mixback?

Download it from mixback.atkabli.com, open the disk image and drag Mixback to Applications. It needs macOS 26 or later on a Mac with Apple silicon. The app is notarized by Apple: the first time you open it, macOS checks it and asks you to confirm.

Which permissions does Mixback ask for?

• Microphone. macOS treats every audio input as a microphone, an audio interface included. Without it, inputs record silence. Mixback asks at first launch.
• System Audio Recording. Needed only to record a DJ app or a DAW on this Mac without a cable. macOS asks the first time you record an app.

To allow them again after saying no, open System Settings > Privacy & Security, then:

• Microphone: turn on Mixback.
• Screen & System Audio Recording: turn on Mixback under System Audio Recording Only.

In Mixback, Settings has an Open button for each pane. Mixback checks again when you come back to it. If the meter stays empty, quit and reopen Mixback.

Which DJ apps and gear work?

Mixback records any audio input on your Mac, such as a controller's or mixer's audio interface, or the output of any app on the Mac. So it works with the DJ software and gear you already use. Setup in pictures covers 7 rigs: controller + Mac, controller + tablet, mixer + players, standalone unit, turntables with or without DVS, just the DJ app, and producer.

Where are my takes saved?

In ~/Music/Mixback (the Mixback folder in your Music folder) unless you choose another folder in Settings. A shareable AAC copy of each take goes in the Copies folder inside it. If you have opened the Music app once on this Mac, each finished take is also added to Music as a track on the album Mixback, through Music's Automatically Add to Music folder. You can turn that off in Settings.

Can I post a take to Mixcloud?

Yes, when Connect shows in the app: connect your Mixcloud account, then post a take from its card on the Takes page. A post starts private, and you make it public on Mixcloud when you are ready.

Is Mixback Pro available?

Not yet. Pro is not on sale. See Pricing for what it will include, and join the list to get an email when it opens. Recording stays free, with no time limit.

Known issues

• Recording a DJ app through a controller with four outputs has been tested on a simulated setup only, not yet on real four-output hardware. If such a take sounds wrong, tell us.
• Mixback does not pick a turntable timecode (DVS) input by itself. It listens for 1.5 s to tell timecode from music: a pure steady tone can look like timecode, and timecode that is stopped during those 1.5 s does not. If the wrong input is picked, choose the right one in Advanced mode.
• Mixback keeps the Mac awake during a take, but closing a laptop's lid still puts it to sleep.
• Mixback is tested on Apple silicon only. It has not been tested on Intel Macs.

Uninstall

1. Quit Mixback and move it from Applications to the Trash.
2. Your takes stay in ~/Music/Mixback, or the folder you chose, until you delete them yourself. Tracks added to Music stay in Music.
3. To remove everything else, delete the app support folder ~/Library/Application Support/Mixback and the settings file ~/Library/Preferences/com.atkabli.mixback.plist. In Terminal, defaults delete com.atkabli.mixback removes the settings too.
4. If you connected Mixcloud, open Keychain Access and delete the login keychain item named Mixback Mixcloud.

To open a Library folder, hold Option in Finder's Go menu and choose Library.

Report a problem

Email support@atkabli.com with the subject “Mixback problem report”. Tell us your Mac model, macOS version, Mixback version, your rig, and what happened. If a take went wrong, attach recorder.log from ~/Library/Application Support/Mixback.

From version 1.0.1, the app also has Help > Report a Problem.
